Group Information

MyRecoveryKC Secular 12-Step Group

In Partnership with Kansas City Public Library, MyRecoveryKC invites you to our secular 12-Step community. This group is a place for anyone seeking recovery, healing, and connection. It's built around the 12-step process, but we take a secular approach--which simply means that we focus on personal growth, mutual support, and shared experience, rather than relying on any specific religious or spiritual belief.

Whether you follow a faith tradition, have your own sense of spirituality, or don't identify with religion at all---you belong here. Our goal is to make recovery accessible and meaningful for everyone. It's a space for honesty, respect, and encouragement; a place where we learn from each other and grow together.

Join Us: Every Monday from 5pm-6pm

North-East Library Branch - 6000 Wilson Ave, Kansas City, MO 64123

Coming in February 2026, join us every Saturday from 11a-12p

Westport Library Branch - 118 Westport Rd, Kansas City, MO 64111

Creating Change -Starting Feb 14, 2026

Creating Change is a trauma-informed therapy group designed for individuals who want to better understand how past experiences have shaped their substance use, mental health, and relationships. Based on the evidence-based Creating Change curriculum by Dr. Lisa Najavits, this group provides a safe, compassionate space to explore personal history, build insight, and foster healing.

Unlike skills-only or symptom-focused groups, Creating Change offers participants the opportunity to reflect on their life story, including trauma, loss, resilience, and surviva, and to make meaning of how these experiences connect to current challenges. The group emphasizes empowerment, choice, and respect, allowing participants to engage at their own pace.

Participants will explore topics such as:

  • Honoring survival and resilience
  • Understanding the roots of addiction and trauma
  • Relationship patterns and boundaries
  • The impact of family, culture, and community
  • Breaking silence and reclaiming one’s voice

Creating Change is appropriate for individuals who are stable enough to reflect on past experiences and who want deeper understanding and personal growth as part of their recovery. The group can be helpful for people in recovery from substance use, trauma, or co-occurring mental health concerns.

This group is facilitated by trained staff using a non-judgmental, strengths-based approach. Participation is voluntary, and members are encouraged — never pressured — to share.

This group will be held at MyRecoveryKC, 300 E 39th St, Kansas City MO 64111. Space is limited if you would like to participate. Please send a message through our web page or contact us at (816) 695-1555.
